Discovering Identity
In today’s culture, one of the most important topics for this Alpha Generation is identity—who am I? Why am I here? Our responsibility as the local church is to meet the needs of the kids God has placed within our oversight with the firm foundation of Scripture.
In years past, Vacation Bible School was the highlight of our summer in kids ministry. We would utilize rotations to talk about missions, complete a craft, play a game, worship, and share a Bible story. Yet now, in an effort to be more focused in reaching this next generation, we have innovated a week of Influence.
Influence is an event rooted in the idea that God intentionally created us, our interests, talents, personality and giftedness for the purpose of knowing Him and making Him known.
It is a multiple-day day camp that allows time for kids to learn or hone a skill of interest with the understanding that God fearfully and wonderfully created them to be known by Jesus and to make Him known to others. While in the presence of family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers at the ball field, in the classroom, on the stage, in the studio, or the lab, we are called to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ. During our time together, kids hear scriptural accounts of men and women who boldly stood for the gospel in times when they were applauded and in times when they were persecuted. They engage in worship and scripture memory as well as have time to process the events of the day in a small group setting.
Please pray for our kids and volunteers that they will know that their identity is found not in their skills or the opinions of others but in their Creator, God Almighty. He defines their worth and has equipped them with skills and interests to speak and act clearly about the transformative power of the gospel of Jesus to everyone in their sphere of influence.
