H.E.A.R. Journal

Something powerful happens when you WRITE DOWN what God is teaching you in His Word. H.E.A.R. Journaling is a simple way for anyone to explore the Bible. Here's how it works:
H.E.A.R. journaling promotes reading the Bible with a life-transforming purposeto understand and respond to God’s Word. The H.E.A.R. acronym stands for HIGHLIGHT, EXPLAIN, APPLY, and RESPOND. Each step contributes to an atmosphere of hearing God speak. As you begin, ask God to speak to your heart. After praying for the Holy Spirit’s guidance:
  • Read the passages for the day.
  • Use the H.E.A.R. outline to write about verses that stand out to you.

H Highlight
Write out the verse(s) that stand out to you. Give it a descriptive title. Typically, this is only 1-2 verses.

E Explain
What does the passage SAY? Why was the text written? To whom was it originally written? How does this text fit with the verses before and after it?

A Application
What does the passage SAY TO ME? What does this text teach me about God? What would the application of this passage look like in my life? Here are some good questions to ask for application:
S - Is there a SIN to confess and avoid?
P - Is there a PROMISE to keep?
E - Is there an EXAMPLE to follow?
C - Is there a COMMAND to obey?
K - Is there KNOWLEDGE of God I need to understand?

R Response
Start or include the phrase, “God, today I… Is there a call to action? Maybe describe how you will be different because of what God has said to you through His Word. Is there something specific you will do because of what you have learned? Keep it simple. What is God leading you to do TODAY?

Every sermon series will have a verse to memorize from our daily readings. Store God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11). Don't simply memorize verses. Let your HEAR Journal help you meditate on the Scripture you memorize.
