There’s an old quote about an ancient king,

“When Alexander reached the sea, he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer.”

Ambition is interesting. The right ambition drives you to discipline. It carries athletes to the Olympics, motivates musicians to compose timeless songs, and moves you to improve your quality of life.

But ambition out of balance provokes envy. It pushes you to overwork and despair and distracts you from the significance of your God-given purpose.

In Acts 6, the church selects deacons to serve the church. The apostles are responsible for prayer and preaching the Word, while the deacons oversee pastoral care.

It’s funny. 

Right after defining their responsibilities, Stephen, one of the first deacons, preaches a powerful message. Wasn't that the Apostle's job!?

Ambition tempts us to believe titles, authority, and positions matter most.  But Scripture makes it clear that these only matter in relationship to the responsibility God entrusts to you.

Don't let ambition distract you.  Be like Stephen; fulfill your mission with grace.
